2010 EPA Emissions: The Simple Path to Clean Emissions Explained

Navistar® Engine Group is a worldwide leader in diesel engine technology and production. MaxxForce® and Navistar have always been ahead of the curve in meeting EPA emissions regulations. As EPA emissions continue to descend to near-zero levels, MaxxForce has developed a solution for diesel engine emissions technology.

The path to meet 2010 EPA Emissions is clear.

In 2010, new EPA emissions regulations call for an 83% reduction in NOx (nitrogen oxides), gaseous pollutants formed during diesel combustion.

Navistar has created an in-cylinder diesel engine solution (EGR) that is compliant with the 2010 emissions regulations. Navistar is confident that its MaxxForce Advanced EGR, as a part of an integrated system, will be the best, customer friendly path to meeting these new standards.

Business as Usual for Navistar Customers in 2010

The MaxxForce Advanced EGR solution fits seamlessly into Navistar’s business plan and our customers will experience business as usual. There will be no radical equipment changes. Operating and maintenance procedures will be the same as always. There won’t be any incremental NOx after-treatment on any core on-highway application (semi truck engine) in 2010. TEM’s won’t have to build around new hardware because there will be none.

EGR will be the customer-focused, customer-preferred EPA emissions solution because it’s the proven technology that customers already understand, know is easily serviced and use transparently in their operations.

Fuel Economy Gains

Fuel Economy

With the technology changes necessary to meet 2007 EPA emissions regulations there was uncertainty about the impact they would have on fuel economy. For Navistar customers with MaxxForce diesel engines, EGR was not a detriment to achieving the fuel economy requirements they require. In fact, Navistar has achieved from 7 to 12 percent gains on 2007 MaxxForce-powered DuraStar trucks. Those gains are due to the integrated truck and engine advantage — aerodynamics, engine and transmission optimization, tire selection, duty cycle/load factor and component specifications — that allows Navistar to provide its customers with better system solutions.

An Integrated Approach

There are advantages to being an integrated truck and engine manufacturer. Navistar’s engineering teams continually work together to minimize the impact of emissions technology on fuel economy and heat rejection and improve EGR components to better manage the fuel system, airflow, combustion and controls. MaxxForce diesel engines feature improved combustion, in part, through a unique combustion bowl design, as well as increased injection pressure, sophisticated controls and calibration, and state-of-the-art air-path management. The product strategy for 2010 was set in 2004 when the engine platforms for all North American MaxxForce engines were designed with the structural integrity that 2010 EPA emissions products require.
